The first step to opening the abortion discussion?

Saskatchewan MP, now Conservative candidate in Saskatoon, Maurice Vellacott tabled a private members bill shortly before parliament fell this week. The bill, intended to allow charges to be laid against individuals who kill pregnant women for the death of the unborn child, is both emotional and controversial.

What Vellacott, a rabid pro-life supporter, is suggesting would essentially open up the abortion debate through a side door and hope nobody will notice. There is no question that the death of a mother carrying a fetus is tragic, however, there are good reasons why this is no illegal in Canada. It is a slippery slope to allow, like in the United States, charges to be laid in the death of fetus. Where do you draw the line next?

"Where do you draw the line next?"

Partial-birth abortions seems to be a good place to draw the next line, if you're asking.

Geez, you'd think that having no law on abortion was a good thing.

Even Europe, specifically France, has restrictions on Abortions. They prevent partial-birth abortions.

Why shouldn't there be additional charges against someone who kills a pregnant woman. I'm sure any pregnant woman will tell you she is carrying a baby in her and not refer to it as a fetus. If you kill a baby, there should be charges.

The issue at hand is one that pertains both to violence against women and the slippery slope of policy regarding abortion. When a man kills a pregnant woman it is intended to make a very political statement by deducing women to their reproductive capacity- reacting with such conservative policy only serves to reinforce their message, further reducing women to the reproductive capacity that the killer was initially meaning to implicate.
As far as partial birth abortions go, and all abortions for that matter- Women do not desire abortions, enjoy them or draw excitement from them. The information I have indicates that abortions are very painful, and the longer you wait the more painful they become. Perhaps the pain of an abortion is thought to be less painful than raising a child alone, scraping by because conservative social policy doesn’t believe in things like universal childcare….just a thought.

FYI
This week kicked off the National Week of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and Dec 6th is the national awareness day. If you don't know about the Montreal Massacre, and the prevalence of violence against women... you should learn.
