Political Priority
It is refreshing to see that American politicians are hard at work solving some of the biggest domestic and foreign problems facing the nation. On Tuesday, new legislation was proposed that would put the sports' steroid policies under the White House drug czar. Athletes in the four major North American professional leagues would be subject to two-year bans for a first positive drug test the new rules.
Senator John McCain (who is a respected and hard-working bi-partisan politician) joined House Government Reform Committee chairman Tom Davis and ranking Democrat Henry Waxman of California in introducing the Clean Sports Act of 2005. It's the second recent bill that would establish minimum, standardized steroids policies across the spectrum of North American sports. At a time when the US is facing massive trade deficits, potential unfunded social security has no comprehensive health care and ignore all World trade and court decisions, it only seems fair for legislatures to meddle in professional sport problems.
It brings the current Canadian situation into a little more context. At least our politicians are spending their time on Canadian social and economic priorities, however, unplanned and haphazard.
