A remarkable Canadian

Has it really been 25 years? Today marks the day that the Marathon of Hope began on April 12, 1980. One can only imagine the thoughts rolling through Terry Fox's mind as he set out across the country.

Some highlights from that remarkable accomplishment:

- Rose every morning before 4:30 a.m., Fox then averaged a staggering 42 kilometres a day. He almost ran a daily marathon - wow!

- Was plagued by a leg stump rubbed raw and bleeding from running on his artificial limb. But he continued with his goal, battling rain, snow and wind.

- By Sept. 1, Fox had run 5,373 kilometres. But he had to end his marathon just outside Thunder Bay, Ont., after the cancer spread to his lungs. I know Ford's that can't go 5,300 kms without trouble.

- Terry Fox marathons are held in more than 50 countries, and have raised more than $360 million for cancer research.

In honour of Terry, I am hitting the gym.
